How to Check a Commercial Catering Gas Engineer

To check a commercial catering gas engineer, verify the person on the Gas Safe Register and inspect both sides of their current ID card. Confirm the fuel and commercial catering categories match the exact appliance and work. A card that says “Gas Safe” does not automatically permit every type of commercial kitchen gas work.

The five checks to make before work starts

  1. Identity: does the card photograph match the engineer?
  2. Date: is the card still valid?
  3. Business: is the engineer working for the registered business you appointed?
  4. Fuel: does the scope cover natural gas or LPG as used on site?
  5. Categories: do the listed commercial catering categories cover the appliance and task?

Why the back of the card matters

The front confirms identity and registration. The back lists the types of gas work the engineer is currently qualified to undertake.

Gas Safe Register notes that commercial categories can depend on the property, appliance type, pipework and gas consumption. That means a domestic boiler category, or even another commercial category, does not prove competence for a catering appliance.

Ask the engineer to show the relevant category rather than accepting a verbal assurance.

Match COMCAT to the exact appliance

Commercial catering gas appliances are grouped across COMCAT 1–5. Broadly, those categories cover:

  • atmospheric-burner catering appliances;
  • pressure steam equipment;
  • fryers, griddles and grills;
  • fish-and-chip ranges;
  • forced-draught burner appliances.

Do not select the category from a generic word such as “oven”. One oven may use atmospheric burners while another has a forced-draught burner. Manufacturer, model and burner type matter.

Match the category to the work

Explain exactly what is needed:

  • new appliance installation;
  • commissioning;
  • exchange or relocation;
  • disconnection;
  • routine service;
  • fault diagnosis and repair;
  • work on interlocks or gas valves;
  • alterations to installation pipework;
  • natural-gas to LPG work or another fuel change.

An engineer may be qualified for appliance work but not every connected activity. The registered business should define who is responsible for pipework, controls, ventilation and commissioning.

Ask for manufacturer competence where relevant

Gas Safe categories establish gas-safety scope; they do not automatically demonstrate product training for every complex appliance.

For specialist combination ovens, fryers, pressure steamers, burners or fish-and-chip ranges, ask:

  • has the engineer worked on this manufacturer and model?
  • do they have access to current service information and diagnostic tools?
  • can they obtain genuine or approved parts?
  • will the repair preserve manufacturer safety and warranty requirements?

This is particularly important when the problem involves electronic combustion controls, pressure systems or software rather than a basic mechanical component.

Provide proper information when booking

The helpdesk or engineer should receive:

  • appliance manufacturer and model;
  • serial number;
  • fuel type;
  • photographs of the appliance and data plate;
  • fault code and symptoms;
  • previous service or repair information;
  • access and operating-hour restrictions;
  • whether the ventilation or interlock is also showing a fault;
  • whether there is any smell of gas, suspected combustion problem or immediate safety concern.

If gas is smelled or an unsafe condition is suspected, follow emergency guidance rather than attempting diagnosis through an ordinary booking form.

Check connected ventilation competence

A commercial gas engineer needs to consider the safety relationship between appliances, room ventilation, mechanical extraction and interlocks. However, holding a COMCAT appliance category does not make that person the designer of the complete DW/172 ventilation system.

For new or altered kitchens, coordinate:

  • ventilation design and commissioning;
  • gas pipework and appliance installation;
  • interlock design and testing;
  • electrical controls;
  • fire strategy;
  • manufacturer requirements.

What documentation should you receive?

Documentation depends on the job, but it should clearly identify:

  • site and date;
  • engineer and registered business;
  • appliances/work covered;
  • tests and commissioning completed;
  • defects found;
  • unsafe-situation classification or warning information where applicable;
  • parts replaced and settings made where relevant;
  • limitations and further work required;
  • next maintenance action;
  • customer acknowledgement where required.

Avoid vague paperwork that only says “gas checked” without identifying the appliances and scope.

A “CP42 certificate” is not the whole answer

The phrase CP42 is widely used in the trade for commercial catering gas-safety records. The important questions are what was actually inspected or tested, whether the engineer was qualified, which appliances and systems were included, and what defects or limitations were recorded.

A certificate does not make an unsafe appliance safe, and it does not replace the duty to maintain equipment in safe condition under regulation 35 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

Choosing a service company

Look for a company that can demonstrate:

  • current Gas Safe business registration;
  • engineers with relevant catering categories;
  • transparent geographic coverage and response arrangements;
  • familiarity with your equipment;
  • clear reports and defect handling;
  • planned-maintenance capability;
  • parts and manufacturer support;
  • appropriate insurance.
