A commercial dishwasher that retains dirty water may have a simple blocked filter, but drain-pump, valve, level-control, hose, waste-pipe and installation faults can present the same way. Overflowing wastewater creates electrical, slip and hygiene risks.
Safety first: Stop the machine if water is approaching electrical parts, overflowing onto the floor, backing up from a foul drain or contaminated with chemicals. Isolate it using the normal control, protect the area from slips and do not place hands into an unseen sump.

- Clean user-removable filters: Remove and refit strainers, wash arms and overflow pieces exactly as the operating manual shows.
- Check the visible waste route: Look for a kinked hose, crushed connection, full grease trap or overflowing tundish without disconnecting hard plumbing.
- Run the normal drain command: Listen for the pump or valve and record the display message. Stop if the floor or drain begins to flood.
- Compare nearby fixtures: Slow sinks or floor drains suggest a building drainage issue, but avoid chemical drain cleaners that may react with warewash chemicals.

A short video or photograph taken from the normal operating position can help, provided doing so does not delay emergency action or expose anyone to heat, gas, electricity, moving parts or chemicals.
Repair or replace?
Filters, hoses, pumps, valves and sensors are usually repairable. Replacement may be more economical where the tank or door is corroded, repeated drainage failures have damaged electrics, the waste arrangement cannot suit the machine, key parts are obsolete or the unit no longer meets the kitchen's throughput and hygiene needs.
Request a written diagnosis rather than a parts list alone. It should identify the failed function, the evidence, any upstream cause and the checks required before the appliance returns to service.
Preventing the fault returning
- Scrape plates and remove labels before loading.
- Clean and correctly refit filters at the required frequency.
- Maintain grease-management and building drains.
- Keep broken glass out of the sump using safe cleanup procedures.
- Record slower drain times before complete failure.
